3 Essential Lessons from My First Design Job

Embarking on my creative journey, I transitioned from the role of a 'Housekeeper' at a local gym to a dynamic opportunity where I could express my design and branding skills. The chance arose when I highlighted and addressed some prevailing challenges within the gym's branding. The year 2022 marked a significant milestone as I eagerly embraced my first foray into the creative industry.

The initial thrill of securing this opportunity was unparalleled, and my motivation soared to new heights. However, the exuberance was swiftly met with the reality of navigating the uncharted territories of my first design job. As I delved into this exciting chapter of my career, the lessons learned were profound, shaping my perspective and skills in ways I hadn't anticipated.

1. Embrace Your Expertise

When entering a design job, the purpose is to delegate specific tasks, freeing others from daily concerns. In this role, immerse yourself in every detail. Knowledge empowers, and as your understanding deepens, so does your confidence. While final decisions may not be yours, expressing expertise in your designated areas enhances the value of your opinion, making it more seriously considered.

2. Proactivity Is Key

The initial phase of a design job can be chaotic, with a flood of new information and skills to absorb. Once you've settled in and established yourself, what comes next? Every company experiences lows, and it's during these moments that you can truly become an invaluable team member. Innovate by proposing new ideas, directions, or processes to improve the current situation. Consistently seeking out issues and offering solutions communicates your commitment to both the company's success and your own professional growth.

3. Embrace Constructive Criticism

In the creative realm, criticism can be challenging to accept, yet it is a vital aspect of professional development. Critique holds valuable lessons, especially in a field where communication is paramount. As a designer, your ability to visually convey ideas and emotions through purposeful techniques is crucial. Even if the criticism is unclear, there is still an underlying issue that needs addressing. Approach criticism as an opportunity to identify and solve problems, as designers are inherently problem solvers.
